The Jon Miller Student Writing Awards

The Jon Miller Student Writing Competition was created in 2019 to honor our friend, teacher, colleague, and mentor, Dr. Jon Miller, who taught English at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics from its opening in 1980 until his retirement in 2015. Dr. Miller passed away in 2017. The program's goal is to promote and recognize outstanding student writing, as Dr. Miller did during his many years of teaching.

The Jon Miller Student Writing Awards Endowment was established in 2022 to provide an ongoing source of funding to organize and administer an annual offering of the Jon Miller Student Writing Competition in perpetuity.

The annual Jon Miller Student Writing Competition, which culminates in the awards, is open to all students enrolled in NCSSM’s residential or online programs. Prizes are awarded in three categories of writing: Non-fiction, Poetry, and Short Fiction. To learn more and view previous winners and their works, visit the Competition website at www.jonmiller.ncssm.edu.

The Competition and Awards are administered by a Steering Committee composed of family, colleagues and former students of Dr. Miller in collaboration with NCSSM. Donations to the Endowment will generate funds for the monetary prizes awarded to students and for additional Competition expenses.
